Coverage Types

There are more kinds of homeowner’s insurance that you expect. Just because you have coverage, doesn’t mean that you have the right kind of coverage or that you have enough coverage for your needs.

Dwelling

This covers the main structure on your property, your home. In the even that your home is damaged or destroyed, this will help cover the cost to repair or rebuild. But note that the cost to rebuild your home can change over time, so make sure that you get your home requoted every few years to prevent undercoverage.

Other Structures

If you have any additional structures on your property that you want to make sure yo protect, like barns, additional garages, or even things like fencing, driveways, or sheds, make sure that you add coverage for them.

Personal Property

This covers all of your personal belonging like your furniture, appliances, clothes, etc. This is often based on an estimate, so make sure to update your insurance if you make any large purchases or you come into possession of any significantly valuable new things.

Loss of Use

If you have to leave your home during repairs or while its being rebuild, this covers the expense of putting you up in a hotel or rental during that time.

Medical Expense

If any guests are ever insured at your home and you need to cover their medical expenses, this provides for that.

Family/Personal Liability

This applies if someone is injured or their property is damaged and you are to blame. When choosing your liability coverage limits, consider things like your income and assets. Your personal liability coverage should be high enough to protect your assets if you are sued. In some situations, an Umbrella policy may help provide extra coverage.

Scheduled Personal Property

If you own anything that is of particularly high value, like jewelry, artwork, collectibles or firearms, that you want covered based on their value, make sure they are listed and covered with this type of policy.
